“Understanding will fail you. Trust will keep you close to Me.” ~ God
the ability to understand something; comprehension.
“My thoughts are nothing like your thoughts,” says the LORD. “And My ways are far beyond anything you could imagine. For just as the heavens are higher than the earth, so My ways are higher than your ways and My thoughts higher than your thoughts.” Isaiah 55:8-9
I have come to learn that understanding, by the world’s definition, will fail you when it comes to the ways of the Lord. For some of us, if we understood everything that the Lord was doing and what He had planned for our lives, we would end up trying to take things into our own hands. When we are left wondering what the next step may be, we are left to have to trust God to direct us to that next step and stay close to Him so that we don’t miss a step. The uncertainty of what the future holds causes us to have to trust in the One Who holds the future. That trust draws us closer to our Guide.
Although we may not understand the Lord’s ways as far as the world defines understanding, we are able to pray for wisdom (understanding) from God.
Give me understanding, and I will keep Your law and obey it with all my heart. Psalm 119:34
The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom, And the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.
Instead of searching for understanding of why God allows certain things to happen in our lives and trying to figure out what His overall plan is, we must remain close to Him by trusting in His plan and following Him along the way. When we go off on our own trying to understand what the Lord is doing and trying to guess His next move, we fail to see Him gesturing us to follow His next step and then we prolong our journey. He knows all that He has in store for us- if He shared it all with us now, it would be overwhelming and/or we would rush things and mess up the blessings before we ever got to receive them. Even if God explained His every move to us (which He isn’t obligated to do because He is GOD) WE WOULD NEVER BE ABLE TO FULLY UNDERSTAND them because His thoughts and ways are so far above ours, we could never fathom them. Trust Him and be surprised by all that He has in store for you.
Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct thy paths. Proverbs 3:5-6
